Mastering Tactical Communication Tools in Florida

Mastering Tactical Communications in Florida with Atlantic Signal
Rescue Operations International (ROI Group LLC) · Authorized Atlantic Signal distributor · Boca Raton, Florida
Effective communication is the backbone of every operation. In Florida, heat, humidity, salt water, storms and tight urban corridors all work against your gear, and comms are the first thing to fail when equipment isn't built for the job. This guide covers how to choose, set up and maintain tactical communication tools for Florida conditions, using the current Atlantic Signal line as the reference.
Atlantic Signal has designed and manufactured its headsets, push-to-talks and cables in Topeka, Kansas since 1989, under the motto "Never trust your life to second best!" Rescue Operations International is listed on Atlantic Signal's Authorized Distributors page, one of a small, select group of U.S. distributors the company uses alongside ordering direct.
Understanding Tactical Communication Tools
A tactical comms system is a chain: radio, cable, push-to-talk (PTT), headset. Any weak link breaks the whole chain. Atlantic Signal builds the parts that sit between the operator and the radio, and that is where most field failures happen.
Headsets carry audio and protect hearing.
PTT switches let you key the radio without taking a hand off the weapon, tool or hose.
Cables and connectors tie the system to your specific radio.
Atlantic Signal's Current Lineup
REV-X (Revolution-X) headset. Two modes for radio and ICS use. In open-air mode, Focused Audio speakers keep your ears uncovered for ventilation and situational awareness. In earpiece mode,
magnetically stowable electronic earpieces give you comms, electronic hearing protection and ambient sound reproduction. It has an ambidextrous waterproof noise-canceling boom mic and a low-profile headband that fits under helmets. Atlantic Signal lists it at 28 NRR with foam tips and 9.6 oz, running on 2 AAA batteries.

ComTac VI headset. Built-in wireless intercom (4 simultaneous talkers, 60+ listeners within 30 ft, VOX or PTT), five mission audio profiles, a tension-adjustable boom mic, level-dependent hearing protection, and an Atlantic Signal custom 5-conductor downlead. Optional ARC helmet mounts are available through Atlantic Signal.
Aries PTT. Compact (2.5 x 1.5 x 0.75 in), no programming, works out of the box. Twin shrouded actuation switches and a repositionable MOLLE clip for left- and right-handed users. Atlantic Signal rates it for submersion to 20 m for 2 hours or 10 m for 10 hours. Compatible with the whole 21GC cable line, and the cables are not chipped, so there is no periodic reprogramming.
21GC comms suite. A sealed, double-overmolded core worn on the back of the vest, with single or dual PTT paddles (up to four PTT switches), stainless-steel screw-down connectors and quick-disconnect radio cables (6-pin for PRC-152, 19-pin for PRC-163). Core and cables are rated by Atlantic Signal for 20 m for 2 hours. It works with dual-net radios, commercial law-enforcement portables, and ground, air and waterborne intercoms.
Nightstalker. An all-in-one Hi/Lo impedance ICS cable for the 21GC and Aries, with one-click switching.
Invictus Dual PTT, Viper II PTT connector, Osprey 22 cable, ARC helmet mount, coiled boat/vehicle cable. Available in Atlantic Signal's shop; ask us about fit with your radios.
Selecting the Right Tools
Match the radio first. Confirm your radio model and connector (6-pin PRC-152, 19-pin PRC-163, commercial portables) before choosing a PTT and cable.
Match the headset to the job. Open-air mode suits work where you must hear your surroundings and stay cool. Earpiece mode suits noisy environments.
Match the mounting to your head gear. A helmet user needs a low-profile headband or ARC mount.
Plan for wet work. If you operate on boats or in storms, choose sealed, submersion-rated components and check the rating on the datasheet for your exact part.
Florida Practical Applications
Environmental challenges
Heat and humidity: ventilated open-air audio helps wearers stay comfortable during long operations.
Salt water and rain: sealed cores, overmolded cables and stainless connectors resist corrosion and moisture.
Hurricanes and flooding: submersion-rated PTTs and cables keep comms alive in wet response work.
Operational scenarios
Search and rescue and marine response.
Law enforcement and SWAT.
Executive protection and event security.
Training and Maintenance
Train with the exact kit you will deploy, including switching between radio and ICS modes.
Rinse salt exposure off connectors and cables with fresh water after marine use and let them dry.
Inspect connectors, strain relief and PTT housings regularly.
Keep spare batteries (the REV-X uses 2 AAA) and a spare cable.
Atlantic Signal offers in-house repair and says it aims to respond within 24 hours.
Integration and Interoperability
Pick a PTT and cable family and standardize across the team. Because the Aries and REV-X work with the 21GC cable line, one set of cables and PTTs can serve multiple headsets and radios, which reduces spares and training time.
